3:15 PM | Anchorage, Alaska breaks all-time winter snowfall record

Paul Dorian

While much of the “Lower 48” had a very mild winter with little snow, Alaska suffered through a long winter to remember. It turned out to be the 9th coldest winter ever for the state of Alaska with temperatures averaging some 5 degrees below average for the January through March time period. Additionally, Anchorage, Alaska received 4.3 inches of snow this past weekend which made this the snowiest winter ever for that city with 134.5 inches (>11 feet) now officially recorded for the 2011-2012 winter. This breaks the all-time winter snowfall record that held in that city since 1954-1955, and easily surpassed the average amount of 74.5 inches.
