Discussion
A blizzard rages on this morning in the Upper Midwest and, when all is said and done, there will be more than a foot of snow on the ground in portions of Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan. Also, winds will reach 50 mph in this region causing extensive blowing and drifting of snow later today and tonight. That same powerful storm system will sweep a strong cold front through the I-95 corridor late tonight and early Friday. Heavy rain will accompany this front in the wee hours of the morning and there can be a rumble or two of thunder. Winds will also get quite gusty as the front heads through the region in the overnight hours. On Friday, temperatures will drop during the day as colder air rushes into the Mid-Atlantic on strong westerly winds and there can even be some snow shower activity late in the day or at night. Saturday will see a continuation of strong winds, cold conditions, and possibly a few more snow showers. In the higher elevations to our north and west (e.g., western and northern PA), a significant “lake-effect” snow event will bring numerous snow showers and some accumulating snow to the mountains.
Looking ahead to next week, the very active pattern continues. There is an increasing threat for a low pressure area to affect the region from Christmas Eve into early Christmas Day (Monday night/early Tuesday) with some light snow or perhaps a mixed bag of precipitation. There will quite likely be a much stronger system that follows around the middle part of next week and that could bring snow or rain to the region. That second system next week is likely to feature one low pressure heading towards the Ohio Valley, but then a secondary development may occur near the Mid-Atlantic coast. Stay tuned, a lot going on.
