Discussion

A weak cold front passed through the region late yesterday and while high pressure will build into the area today, temperatures will be some ten degrees lower this afternoon compared to Wednesday. Another cold front will arrive on Friday and this will set the stage for a chilly weekend and early part of next week. Looking ahead, a major pattern change will begin by around the middle of next week with a sustained period of colder-than-normal weather coming to the central and eastern US. This change to sustained cold in the Mid-Atlantic region will be brought about by a combination of strong high-latitude blocking (i.e., nearly stationary strong high pressure over Greenland), an intensifying upper-level trough in the central and eastern US, and strong high pressure ridging along the west coasts of Canada and the US.
