6:00 AM | *April begins on the chilly side*

Paul Dorian

Another shot of cold air has pushed into the Mid-Atlantic region from central Canada and we’ll stay colder-than-normal for the next couple days as we begin the new month of April. Low pressure will intensify off the Carolina coastline by late tomorrow, but it looks like its main impact will stay just to the east of here as it slides into the western Atlantic. This system, however, still needs to be closely monitored. High pressure will build into the region for much of Wednesday and Thursday and then another low is likely to bring us some rain on Thursday night and Friday.

6:00 AM | *Much milder today and 70+ degrees on the table for Saturday afternoon...next cold shot arrives on Sunday*

Paul Dorian

The warm up that began yesterday will intensify today and highs should exceed the 70 degree mark on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the warm up comes to a grinding halt on Sunday as a strong cold front slides through the Mid-Atlantic region with some shower activity and a much colder air mass will become quite noticeable by Sunday night along with a stiffening north-to-northwest wind. Colder-than-normal conditions will persist through mid-week in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor resulting in a chilly start to the month of April and we’ll have to watch a coastal storm which could impact the region in the Tuesday night/Wednesday morning time frame.

6:00 AM | *Warmer weather this afternoon for the Phillies home opener...warm up intensifies on Friday and Saturday*

Paul Dorian

Today is Opening Day for the Phillies and the timing will be just right as a significant warming trend will be getting underway in the Mid-Atlantic region. After a frosty start to the day, low-level winds will switch to a south-to-southwest direction this afternoon resulting in a push of milder air and temperatures should climb to near 60 degrees just in time for the home opener. This warm up will intensify on Friday and Saturday and despite plenty of clouds on both days, afternoon highs should reach the 60's on Friday and 70 degrees on Saturday. Unfortunately, the warm up comes to a grinding halt on Sunday as a strong cold front slides through the Mid-Atlantic region with numerous showers and a much colder air mass will become quite noticeable by Sunday night along with a stiffening north-to-northwest wind. Colder-than-normal conditions will persist through mid-week in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor resulting in a chilly start to the month of April and we’ll have to watch a storm near the southeast US coastline to see if it can push northward along the Atlantic seaboard.

1:20 PM (Wed) | *Big warm up for Friday and Saturday...another cold shot arrives late Sunday and keeps us chilly into mid-week…deep upper-level low in the SE US early next week needs to be monitored*

Paul Dorian

It looks like we may have to wait a bit longer for sustained springtime warmth in the Mid-Atlantic region as despite a dramatic warm up on Friday and Saturday, we’ll turn sharply colder again for the first half of next week.  In fact, there can be a second cold shot late next week that makes its way into the Mid-Atlantic region which would mean we may have to wait until the second week of April for more sustained springtime warmth.  In addition, there will be a deep upper-level feature sliding across the southern states early next week with cold air in place across the NE US/Mid-Atlantic.  This system could push off the Carolina coastline and stay south of here, but it’ll be something to closely monitor in coming days to see if it can make a run up the eastern seaboard.

7:00 AM | *Still chilly today, but a nice warming trend begins tomorrow...70 degrees possible on Saturday*

Paul Dorian

Today will be another below-normal day in the Mid-Atlantic region in terms of overall temperatures, but a warming trend will begin on Thursday as our low-level winds will switch to a southwesterly direction on the back side of departing high pressure. The warming trend will intensify on Friday and Saturday and 70+ degrees will be possible as we start the weekend. Showers are a threat for Sunday as the next cold frontal system arrives from the Midwest and it’ll turn colder as we begin the new week (and the new month) on Monday.

7:00 AM | *A cold air mass for the next couple of days...warming trend begins on Thursday*

Paul Dorian

A chilly air mass for this time of year has moved into the Mid-Atlantic region following the passage of a cold frontal system. Temperatures will remain below-normal for the next couple of days despite plenty of sunshine all along the I-95 corridor. On Thursday, high pressure will edge off the coast and it’ll turn breezy and milder – just in time for the Phillies home opener. Even warmer weather will take place on Friday and Saturday, but showers are a threat for Sunday as the next cold front approaches.

7:00 AM | *Another cold shot headed our way and it'll stay chilly through mid-week...looks nice for the Phillies home opener on Thursday*

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will ride along an approaching cold front today and likely spread some rain shower activity into the Philly metro region during the late afternoon and evening hours. Following the frontal passage, colder air will push into the Mid-Atlantic region for the next couple of days with below-normal temperatures generally confined to the 40’s for highs. It’ll turn milder on Thursday just in time for the Phillies home opener and sunshine should boost afternoon temperatures well into the 50’s. The nice weather will continue on Friday and Saturday, but a cold front could bring some showers our way on Sunday.

7:00 AM | **An unstable day with increasing winds and possible PM rain and/or snow showers...thunderstorm cannot be ruled out**

Paul Dorian

Intensifying low pressure is headed towards northern New England this morning from around Long Island, but that won’t be the end of the threat for precipitation in the Mid-Atlantic region. An Arctic frontal system supported by a strong wave of energy in the upper atmosphere will slam into the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US later today and this will result in wind gusts of 40+ mph and possible PM rain and/or snow showers, maybe even an isolated thunderstorm. Any thunderstorm that does form later today could produce small hail as freezing levels will be quite low in the lower atmosphere. The wind and cold will stick around during the first part of the weekend, but it’ll turn noticeably milder and calmer on Sunday with mid 50’s likely for afternoon highs. Looking ahead, the weather is looking pretty favorable for the Phillies home opener next Thursday afternoon with some sunshine expected and temperatures likely in the 50's.

10:15 AM | **Heavy rain event for the Mid-Atlantic with 2+ inches on the table…very unstable on Friday with wind gusts to 40 mph and numerous snow and/or rain showers**

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will intensify rapidly along the eastern seaboard over the next 24-36 hours resulting in a heavy rain event from today into early Friday in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Rainfall amounts of more than two inches are possible by late tonight and flash flood watches have been posted in a large area given the saturated grounds.  In the higher elevation interior sections from western Virginia/West Virginia/southwestern Pennsylvania to northern New England significant snow is likely to occur during this event as colder air will wrap into the system later today and tonight.

By later tomorrow, the strong low pressure system will be near the southern part of Maine, but that won’t be the end of the story for the Mid-Atlantic region in terms of inclement weather.  An Arctic cold blast supported by a strong wave of energy in the upper atmosphere will slam into the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast US later tomorrow and this will result in wind gusts of 40 mph or so and numerous snow and/or rain showers.  The wind and cold will stick around during the first part of the weekend in the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor, but it’ll turn noticeably milder and calmer on Sunday with 60 degrees possible in DC and upper 50’s in Philly and NYC.

7:00 AM | **Heavy rain event today and tonight with 2+ inches on the table...unstable on Friday with windy, cold conditions and snow/rain showers**

Paul Dorian

Low pressure will intensify along the Mid-Atlantic coastline today and lead to a heavy rain event in the Mid-Atlantic region with 2+ inches on the table around here. It’ll stay on the chilly side today and tonight as bands of heavy rain swirl around the intensifying low pressure system. By tonight, the steadier rain will evolve into a showery pattern and the winds will pick up in intensity. There is the potential for coastal flooding at high tide later this evening given the combination of the heavy rain and coincident full moon. A blast of Arctic air will arrive on Friday and this cold air outbreak will be accompanied by a strong wave of energy in the upper atmosphere. As a result, tomorrow is likely to be quite unstable with windy and cold conditions along with the likelihood of snow and/or rain showers in the Mid-Atlantic region. The cold and wind will stick around as we begin the weekend, but it’ll turn noticeably milder and calmer on Sunday to go along with plenty of sunshine.
