After a chilly start to the day, temperatures today should climb to the lower 60’s for afternoon highs and similar conditions are expected on Saturday. However, by Sunday, a big-time warmup will begin in much of the eastern US and temperatures here will soar into the low-to-mid 80’s as high pressure pushes off the east coast. It turns even warmer on Monday with temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 80’s across the DC metro region. A cold front passed through the region on Wednesday and ushered in a chilly air mass that will stick around into the upcoming weekend. Temperatures today will have a hard time reaching the 60 degree mark which is well below-normal for this time of year and are likely to drop back to near 40 degrees in many spots late tonight for the overnight lows.
A big-time warmup, however, is on the way for the eastern US beginning this Sunday after high pressure pushes off the coast. Temperatures on Sunday afternoon are likely to climb to 80 degrees around here and then climb to the upper 80’s on Monday.

There have been occasional cold air outbreaks from Canada into the Northeast US and Mid-Atlantic region during the month of April and this week will be no exception. In fact, low temperatures this morning were in the 30’s across many suburban locations along the DC-to-Philly-to-NYC corridor with scattered frost in some areas. Another chilly air mass will push into the northeastern states at mid-week following the passage of a strong cold front and early Thursday morning is likely to feature more low temperatures in the 30’s with patchy frost again on the table.
Next week, however, will feature a big-time warmup across the eastern half of the nation coinciding pretty well with the transition from April into May. Temperatures can climb well up into the 70’s by Sunday afternoon in places like DC, Philly, and New York City and 80+ degrees is possible for highs on Monday and the upcoming pattern change will result in far less frequent outbreaks of chilly air from Canada into the US.
